Chiropodist VS Podiatrist
Chiropodist VS Podiatrist

If I had a pound for every time someone asked me what the difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist was…well, I wouldn’t need to be a podiatrist anymore! (Just kidding - I love my job. I’d still do it. I’d just be a lot richer!)

So, what is the difference?

The short answer is: there isn’t one.

Is a Chiropodist the Same as a Podiatrist?

Yes - in the UK, chiropodist and podiatrist mean the same thing.

Both terms refer to a healthcare professional who diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the feet, ankles and lower limbs.

However, “podiatrist” is now the correct and modern professional title.

Why Do People Still Say Chiropodist?

In the UK, the profession used to be known as chiropody, and practitioners were called chiropodists.

Several years ago, the title was changed to podiatrist because:

  • The level of qualification increased

  • Training moved from a diploma to an honours degree in podiatry/podiatric medicine

  • The profession became more medically and surgically focused

Although the professional title changed, many people still use the word chiropodist out of habit, especially older generations.

So if someone says:

“I’m going to see my chiropodist”

They almost always mean:

“I’m going to see my podiatrist.”

What Is the History of the Word “Chiropodist”?

The term chiropodist comes from ancient Greek:

  • chiro = hand

  • pous/pod = foot

Originally, chiropodists treated both hands and feet.Over time, the profession focused solely on foot care.

(Fully intended foot pun aside...yes, they became solely focused on feet 😄)

What Does “Podiatry” Mean?

The modern term podiatry also comes from Greek:

  • pous/pod = foot

  • iatreia = healing

So podiatry literally means:

“The healing and treatment of the foot.”

This term was first widely used in America and later became internationally accepted, including in the UK.

Are Chiropodists and Podiatrists Qualified?

Yes. And this part is very important.

In the UK, anyone practising as a podiatrist must be:

  • University-trained

  • Clinically qualified

  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC is the regulatory body that protects patients and ensures healthcare professionals meet strict training and professional standards.

How Can I Check If My Podiatrist Is Properly Registered?

You can check whether your podiatrist is registered by using the HCPC’s official register.

As long as your practitioner appears on the HCPC register, you can be confident they are fully qualified and legally allowed to practise.

Final Thoughts

So, to summarise:

  • There is no difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist in the UK

  • Both terms refer to the same profession

  • “Podiatrist” is now the correct professional title

  • All practising podiatrists must be registered with the HCPC

If you’re ever unsure about a practitioner’s qualifications, always check the HCPC register for peace of mind.

Always consult your podiatrist for personalised foot care advice. Nothing in this blog post or on this website should be used as a substitute for medical advice.
